How Do I Join?

The PDP is a subsidiary of the American Whig-Cliosophic Society, the nation’s oldest political, literary, and debating society. Following an exhibition debate and open house every September, students interested in joining the PDP attend tryouts, which usually consist of an impromptu speech on a current event topic. Students selected from tryouts then become full members of the PDP.

What Kind of People Join?

Many successful high school debaters from the National Forensics League (NFL), National Catholic Forensic League (NCFL), National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA), and Junior State of America (JSA) have joined the PDP. Many international debaters (particularly those who competed at the World Schools Debating Championships) have also made successful transitions to American-style parliamentary debate. However, no prior experience is necessary; many of our most successful debaters have never debated before.
